Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage established in 1975 as place for shelter and care the wounded elephants and abandoned baby elephants found in jungle. This is covered a area over 24 acre land.

This area is not a jungle, just a garden with coconut trees. So items such as jackfruit leaves(branches), coconut tree branches and Kithul tree branches taken out side to fed elephants. Other than those, they were fed with mixture of some nutritious foods such as rice, Gingerly seeds, maize and etc

The main daily activities taken place in the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage are Feeding milk to baby elephants and the bathing sessions.

The centre opens at 8.30 in the morning and closes at 6pm daily. Bottle feeding is at 9.15am, 1.15pm & 5pm and bathing times at the river is at 10am and 2pm.

Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage is about 40 km from kandy and 90 km from Colombo.
